Packs Make Southern Modified Tour A Family Tradition

The NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour will return to action this Friday night in the Whelen Southern Modified Tour 150 at the famed Caraway Speedway after taking its annual ‘Spring Break.'

As the cars and stars of the Whelen Southern Modified Tour return to action at the .455-mile short track, so too will the father and son combination of veteran Gene Pack and his 34-year-old son, Brian. When the green flag drops at 8 p.m., Brian will be behind the wheel of the No. 81 B&J Builders Chevrolet while his father will pilot the No. 31 B&J Builders Chevrolet.

The two Packs are two of the most comical figures in the Whelen Southern Modified Tour garage area, a firm focus on winning races and being competitive, but ...

Burt Myers and Michael Clifton Split Modified Wins at Bowman Gray

by Loren Pinilis(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) A wet track was the best thing – and the worst thing – for Tim Brown at Bowman Gray Stadium on Saturday.
After a brief rainstorm fell upon the Stadium, qualifying for the Farm Bureau Insurance Modified Series was cancelled. Instead, the competitors started the first 25-lapper in the order of points – placing Tim Brown of Cana, Va. on the pole.
Brown shot out into the lead with Burt Myers of Walnut Cove claiming second right behind him. The #83 car of Brown coasted around the track, dominating the competition. For most of the race, Burt Myers was no threat to Brown.
When a ...

Will The Real Junior Miller Stand Up

by Skip Wall
So just what is up in the Junior Miller camp these days?
Miller a multiple time track champion at Winston Salems Bowman Gray stadium may even question himself after all the scenarios this season at the stadium and the Whelen Southern Modified Tour.
At the beginning of the season Miller of Danbury NC gave up one of the most coveted rides in the Modified Series, with Riggs Racing out of Martinsville Va, and of whom has one of the better sponsors in racing with Advance Auto Parts.

Miller stated in an earlier interview that he wanted to spend more time close to home and at the historic stadium. He went with Melvin “Puddin” ...

Myers Works to Stay in Points Race at Bowman Gray

100-lap restart rule saves Myers’ day.

by Loren Pinilis(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) Bowman Gray Stadium’s Defending Champion Burt Myers is quickly becoming a fan of a 2008 rule change he was initially hesitant about.
Many drivers started the season off by expressing their distaste of a new double-file restart rule for 100-lappers for the Farm Bureau Insurance Modified Series. Restarts after a caution will now have double-file lineups – but the twist is that drivers get to choose whether they will take the inside or outside as their starting row. Drivers could play it safe and stick to the inside, or risk the outside...

Junior Miller Takes Checkered But Fleming Was Winner at Bowman Gray

Penalty gives the Tucson 100 victory to Chris Fleming.

by Loren Pinilis(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) Junior Miller was especially pleased to take the checkered in the Tucson 100 on Saturday – it was the 69th time that the driver of the number 69 car had won at the Stadium.
Or at least he thought he won.
Miller’s car was formally protested by Chris Fleming of Mt. Airy, who finished in second right behind Junior. Technical inspection revealed that Miller’s engine had improper heads, and he was taken from the lead down to a last-place finish. Fleming was declared the winner.
The race started off on a good no...

New Faces Add to Future of Southern Modifieds

(King, NC): When the ASA / Southern Modified Race Tour rolls into Dillon Motor Speedway next Saturday afternoon, followers of the touring Modified series will see many of the regular faces we have grown used to seeing but there is definitely change on the horizon for the Southern Mods.

We are all accustomed to seeing L. W. Miller, Jason Myers, Frank Fleming, Brian King (King was the winner last year at DMS) and Jay Foley on the entry list and all those names and many more Southern “regulars” will be in action on the 4/10 mile track Saturday night. Josh Nichols, Scott Rigney, 2007 ASA/SMRT “Rookie of the Year”, John Lain, Greg Butcher, Kevin Wils...

"Rambling Rose"

by Skip Wall
He cant seem to get racing out of his mind. All 79 years of it.
Meet Ernest “Rosie” George from Kernersville NC.

He still likes to climb behind the wheel of an old coupe race car in the East Coast Flat Head Association Series.

He still has a good time running whether he runs good or not. “Its just the fact that im still able to do it” he says with a sheepish grin.

Moreover he will tell you he still thinks he can win even at his age.
But Rosie George comes from the old school of racing.
For years and years he was an official at the famed Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston Salem NC during the Joe and Alv...

Brown On Top of Ladder at Bowman Gray – But How Long?

Tucson 100 this Saturday Set to Shake Things Up.

(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) Tim Brown is looking to continue his streak. Out of six qualifying attempts, he’s been the fastest each time. Out of the last two weeks, he’s won twice.
“The momentum is our way right now. The car’s hooked up, the motor’s running strong, and the guys are working well together,” said Brown, a resident of Cana, Va. With his last two victories coming in 25-lap races, Brown is a fan of the short, intense events at the Stadium. “I just like them because you’re up on the wheel the whole time, and you’re bringing everything you’ve got for 25 laps,” said...

Johnson Wins In Barnburner

by Skip Wall

There is a saying that if you cant stand the heat then get out of the kitchen. And if your looking for a barnburner then Newport Speedway was the place to be this past Saturday night for the fourth stop of the Super Cup Stock Car Series.

Daniel Johnson became the first two time winner in the young Super Cup Series. He also had won at Franklin County a few weeks ago.

Johnson had to ward off coming down pitroad during the 100 lap event, and had to hold off several challenges for the lead in the race.

Johnson held off hard charging Jim Crabtree Jr, who had won this race earlier this year.

Rob Jones: From Cockpit to Cockpit

by Skip Wall

Rob Jones is a man on a mission. He has done flybys in planes at various NASCAR races and NFL football games.

But the cockpit of a plane isn't where this Bowie MD. resident wants to be. Jones hopes to be racing in the Nationwide Series within the next three to four years. That's his long term goal.

However, Jones for now wants to just get his racing started. And this weekend Jones will get that chance when he will be the first black driver to compete in the Super Cup Stock Car Series next event at Newport TN.

Jones knows what it takes to go racing and has a good head on his shoulder in which to take a step...

Brown and Elliott Split Modified Victories at Bowman Gray

(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) Tim Brown loves the 25-lap races at
Bowman Gray Stadium – and after his performance on Saturday, it’s easy to
see why he’s a little biased.
“I just like them because you’re up on the wheel, and you’re bringing
everything you’ve got for 25 laps,” said Brown, a resident of Cana,
Virginia. And the #83 car of Brown hel...
